Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael

The archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael are the only three angels named in Scripture. In Christian tradition (along with many other religious traditions), angels are messengers of God. Michael is seen in the book of Daniel and in the book of Revelation, where he commands God’s army. He is associated with protection from evil. Gabriel is best known for announcing to Mary that God had chosen her to be the mother of Christ, and he is considered the guardian of the mystery of the Incarnation. Raphael is mentioned in the book of Tobit, where he helps Tobit become healed of his blindness, marry Sarah, and restore his wealth. He is associated with healing and guiding. The archangels’ feast day is September 29.

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” — Luke 1:30

Questions for Reflection

Who has acted as a messenger of God in your own life? How have you served as a messenger of God for another person? In what ways do you need protection, revelation, or healing in your life right now?
