Saint Augustine

Saint Augustine of Canterbury was born in the 6th century A.D. Chosen by Pope Gregory to convert the Saxons in England, Augustine was sent out with a group of Monks to assist him. Initially, the group was told many terrible stories about England and refused to go, fearing for their lives. After some assurance from Pope Gregory, the group continued their quest. When they arrived in Canterbury, Augustine converted King Ethelbert who in return gave them land to build a mission. Augustine became the bishop of England and it is said that he converted thousands of people during a Christmas mass in 597. His feast day is May 27.
