St. Zita

St. Zita is the patron saint of maids and domestic servants (and is typically invoked to help find lost keys.) She was born in Tuscany, Italy, and at the age of 12 became a servant to the Fatinelli household, where she was gravely mistreated but nonetheless remained in service for the 48 remaining years of her life. She saw her work as a task given to her by God and was devoted both to God’s service and to the duties associated with her work.

One particular tale of Zita’s blend between faith and work goes as follows: One morning, Zita was given the chore of baking bread for the Fatinelli family. However, she neglected this in favor of helping someone in need. When some of the other servants went to check on Zita, they found angels in the kitchen baking the bread for her. To this day, baking a loaf of bread on St. Zita’s feast day (April 27) is a tradition in her honor.
