The Annunciation of Mary

The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord has been celebrated since the fourth or fifth century and is one of the primary Marion feasts. It is celebrated on March 25, nine months before Christmas day, and commemorates the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she was to be the mother of Christ, as told in the first chapter of Luke’s Gospel. The mystery of the Incarnation is at the heart of this feast, God becoming human and living among us.

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to be according to your word.” — Luke 1:38

Questions for Reflection:

  • As Christians, we believe that God became incarnate in Jesus Christ. How does this presence of the divine in creation impact how you see the world?

  • The story of the Annunciation highlights several of Mary’s virtues that make her such an important role model for people of faith: trust, courage, openness to God’s will for her life. Which of Mary’s virtues do you feel called to emulate in your life right now?
