Lent Begins

Readings for March 9, 2014 — First Sunday of Lent

Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7; Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 17; Romans 5:12-19 or Romans 5:12, 17-19; Matthew 4:1-11

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • In this first reading from the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve give into temptation. They disobeyed God’s request to not eat the fruit of the tree and this led to great consequences in their lives. What are some ways you have been tempted? How do you overcome temptation? What are some of the consequences that come along with giving into temptation?
  • This week’s Psalm reminds us that we all sin. We are constantly tempted and giving into temptation. Even the pope goes to confession every day! Pope Francis tells us “Forgiveness is not something we can give ourselves … One asks forgiveness, one asks it of another person, and in confession, we ask forgiveness from Jesus.” As Catholics, we have this unique opportunity to go to confession. Take advantage of this. Try doing an examination of conscience if you never have before. Reflect on your sins before going to Reconciliation and think about why you have sinned and what it is you can do to be better.
  • The story of Jesus’ suffering in the desert is the theme of this week’s Gospel reading. This Lenten season, how can we grow closer to God? If you still haven’t decided, what will you be giving up for Lent? How will giving something up challenge you to grow in your faith?
