#GivingTuesday

We’ve got Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but don’t forget about Giving Tuesday! Giving Tuesday (December 2 this year) is a day dedicated to giving back during a season that is often oversaturated with consumption. It’s an opportunity to get back to the true meaning of the season and to shed light on others.

It’s easy to forget how fortunate so many of us are. We often get caught up in the holiday hustle — the presents, the expansive meals, and the flashing lights. There’s so much more to the Advent/Christmas season. Christmas is meant to celebrate the birth of Christ, and an opportunity for reflection and gratitude. It’s out of that spirit of gratitude that we’re called to give to others — especially those in need.

This holiday season, try to find a balance between consumerism and giving to others. Giving Tuesday is your first chance! Here are some discussion questions to get young adults talking about generosity.

  • What are some of your favorite charities? Pick at least one and pledge an amount this Giving Tuesday. Short on cash? Sign-up to volunteer in the New Year.

  • How has Christmas shopping/spending had a negative impact on you — this year or in the past? What did you learn from that experience?

  • How can you fight the feeling of being overwhelmed by the distractions of the holiday season? What are some things you do to cope and remember what Christmas is really about?
