Saint George was born circa 280 in Lod, Syria-Palestine. Known in legends for killing a dragon and saving a princess, George was actually a member of the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian. He became known as a great fighter and was soon made an officer. After a few years Diocletian announced that all Christian soldiers were to be arrested. George openly opposed this persecution and so the emperor, not wanting to arrest his best officer, attempted to convert George to worshipping the Roman gods. George stayed committed to his faith and was subsequently executed. George is the patron saint of soldiers. His feast day is celebrated April 23.

If Saint George were alive today, he might be a security advisor to the Pope.
