Be Alert and Watchful

Readings for Sunday, December 3 — The First Sunday of Advent

Isaiah 63:16B-17, 19B, 64:2-7; Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:33-37

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • In the first reading, we hear a beautiful analogy of our relationship with God. We are the clay and He is the potter: “We are all the work of your hands.” What are some of the qualities that a good potter must have? Now, think about those in relation to God. How is God like a potter for us? Now, think of yourself as clay. What are some characteristics of clay that are also true of you, too? Are you molding yourself into the person you want to be? Are you letting God take the lead in molding you? If not, what is holding you back?
  • Now, look at the second reading (1 Corinthians) and make a list of adjectives and verbs listed in that reading. Without going back to the reading, look at your list and meditate on the message. The language Paul chose is very specific. What sort of message is he sending us?
  • In the Gospel, we are told repeatedly to be alert and watchful. Will we be found watchful or sleeping? In what way are you or others in our society “sleeping”? What sort of life would we lead to confer that we are alert and watchful?
