Scripture tells us that Joseph of Arimathea (a wealthy Jew and member of the Council) and Nicodemus (a Pharisee) were secret followers of Jesus. The Gospel of John, chapter 3, tells the story of Nicodemus coming to see Jesus in the dark of night to hear his teachings. Joseph of Arimathea claimed the body of Jesus after his death on the cross and arranged for him to be anointed and buried in his own tomb. Nicodemus also assisted in Jesus’ burial. They are the patron saints of undertakers. Their feast day is August 31.

 Questions for Reflection:

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus first hid their faith in Jesus because they were afraid of losing their worldly positions of power, but they were eventually graced with the courage to live their faith publicly.
