Trusting God in Times of Crisis

Readings for Sunday, January 31 — Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 1:4-5,17-19; Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15-17; 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 or 13:4-13; Luke 4:21-30

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The first reading from the Prophet Jeremiah includes God’s words of encouragement to the beleaguered and besieged prophet. God promises to deliver Jeremiah from those who fight against him. From what do you need God’s deliverance and protection this week?

  • The psalmist describes our dependence on God even as we are being formed in the womb. God is our strength when we are vulnerable and our guide in the way of justice. What wondrous deeds can you do this week to proclaim God’s steadfast love to someone in crisis?

  • In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus returns to his hometown to teach in the synagogue. Upon hearing his words, the crowd drives him to the edge of a great cliff. Instead of being hurled over the edge by his angry countrymen, Jesus passes through the midst of them and continues on his way. Sometimes speaking up for what’s right isn’t exactly popular. Is there a difficult conversation you’ve been putting off? Pray for the courage to have it this week and ask God to help you pass through the midst of your fear and hesitation with love.
