Hearing, Doing, Being

Readings for Sunday, August 30th — 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; Ps 15: 2-5; James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27; Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The first reading from Deuteronomy talks about the rightness of the law given to the Israelites by God. Do you think that the laws of our nation are just? Do our public policies reflect the wisdom and intelligence of God’s commandments?

  • In what ways is your faith something actively lived, not just believed? In other words, how are you a “doer” of the word, not just a “hearer” of it?

  • In what ways do your actions arise from an authenticity of heart, from a place of love, not obligation? In other words, how are you not just a “doer” of the word, but a “be-er” in the word?
