St. Isaac Jogues

St. Isaac Jogues was born in Orleans, France in 1607. After becoming a member of the Society of Jesus, Isaac traveled to present day Manhattan and began converting Native Americans. He was captured and brutally tortured by the people there, losing several of his fingers. However, this did not keep Isaac from spreading the word of God. He returned and negotiated a peace agreement between the Native Americans and the French. Isaac was later martyred by the Mohawks in 1646. Saint Isaac Jogues is the patron saint of Canada. His feast day is celebrated October 19.
