Powerball Lessons

84-year-old Gloria Mackenzie made headlines last week when she walked away with a $500 million-plus Powerball jackpot from a Publix in Zephyrhills, Florida. When asked about how she won, Mackenzie said the following: “While in line at Publix, another lottery player was kind enough to let me go ahead of them in line to purchase the winning quick-pick ticket.”

The other lottery player who let her cut in line was Mindy Crandall, a 34-year-old mother also from Zephyrhills. Some of her friends prodded her about the whole situation, saying that she cost herself the winning ticket by doing the right thing. However, as Crandall’s 10-year-old daughter Mallory said, “Sometimes, it’s better to be patient than rich.” Use this article and the questions below to discuss the merits of making good decisions in difficult scenarios:

  • Have there been times when you have chosen to do the right thing in a difficult situation? Did you get flack for it later on?
  • How would you feel if you were in Mindy’s shoes right now?
  • How does God help you to make better, more faith-positive decisions in your life?
  • Make a commitment to do three random acts of kindness for stranger this week.
