You Have Rescued Me

Readings for Sunday, June 5 — Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

1 Kings 17:17-24; Psalm 30:2, 4-6, 11-13; Galatians 1:11-19; Luke 7:11-17

Suggested Reflection Questions:

  • The reading from 1 Kings tells the story of the prophet Elijah interceding for the dying child of a widow he is visiting. What is the role of intercessory prayer in the life of the Church? If God is omniscient and omnipotent, why do we ask for what we need?

  • Today we pray with the psalmist that God will hear us when we call out in distress and be our helper. God helps us and comes to our aid. We can see the reflection of the Divine in those who serve in helping professions. How can our parishes show our gratitude for those who devote their lives to coming to the aid of those in need? If God is both King and Helper, what should just earthly leadership look like?

  • In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus — moved by pity — rescues a mother from her grief and her son from the grave. The Church teaches us that Jesus’ heart is overflowing with mercy. Can you think of one experience in your life that illustrates God’s rescuing mercy? As people of faith, how do we understand those moments when, unlike the woman and her son in Luke’s Gospel, we are not rescued from our pain or trouble?
