Readings for July 13, 2014 — 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 55:10-11; Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23

Suggested Reflection Questions:

• In the first reading from Isaiah, we learn that we need to be willing to live a meaningful and purposeful life. More than going to church every week, it is doing good deeds out in the world and helping others that lets us to live a fulfilling life. Participating in these things help us to grow closer in our relationship with God. Have you ever noticed your behavior change after being more kind to others? How has it made you feel? How can you make a more permanent change to do something kind every day?

• We often struggle to find God in times great suffering. It can be hard to find the good in bad situations. However, God shows us that, “the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.” Sometimes when struggles become too difficult to handle we need to “Let Go and Let God.” How can you remember to “Let Go and Let God” the next time you face hardship?

• Jesus is asked in the Gospel reading this week why he speaks in parables. Just like homilies, parables are made to resonate with people to help them understand God’s word, interpreted using things that are already very familiar. Think about the homily you heard about this Gospel or any other Gospel that really stuck with you. What is the message you are receiving? What is God instructing you to do or work on?
